Alzheimer’s disease, which is named after its discoverer, predominantly affects the elderly and is identified by an advanced loss of brain cells and the resulting advanced inability of the patient to perform higher mental functions. This inability is also called dementia and in the case of Alzheimer’s disease it affects memory, speech, planning, behavior, and orientation.
The disease more often affects women and does not usually begin until age 65. In the early stages of the disease, the patient shows signs of forgetfulness, inability to recall words, as well as disorientation of time and place. Later, the patient may no longer be able to carry out such everyday tasks on their own such as bodily hygiene, getting dressed, eating, or drinking. Additionally, delusions, unease, Parkinson’s symptoms, or depression may also occur. An especially tragic aspect of this disease is its effect on loved ones, who are suddenly no longer recognized as such.
There is currently no treatment for Alzheimer’s that can cure it. There are however medications that can reduce symptoms of dementia and allow those with Alzheimer’s to remain self-sufficient for a while longer and stay involved with their surroundings.
