An allergy is a condition when the immune system overreacts to certain foreign substances that are called allergens (mostly proteins), and then results in some allergic reactions. The immune system can produce antibodies to attack any foreign substances that are intruding the body. These foreign substances are called allergens. However, when the antibodies start to massively attack certain allergens that are thought to be harmless to the body, it will lead to allergic reactions. The common allergens include pollens, dirt, dust mites, molds and even medications. In these cases, most allergic reactions result from the overreaction of the immune system and will inflame the skin. Allergic reactions can be classified in four different types by their immunological mechanics, known as the coombs and gell classification. People with an allergic reaction happening to the skin mostly show eczema in the form of flat-toped pale papules on red skin, accompanied by itching. Often, affected persons suffer from several allergies at the same time. The predisposition to develop several allergies is called atopy. Therefore they additionally may have symptoms such as skin swelling, a runny nose and coughing.
The treatments of an allergic skin reaction include 1) avoidance of allergens: it is important to find the specific allergen (by a skin test called “prick test”) and avoid further contact, and 2) medications to reduce symptoms: antihistamine tablets can prevent allergic reactions, anti-itch or steroid cream can relieve the itching.
