Therefore affected persons may only feel a sudden pain or even just an unpleasant feeling. Repetitive patellar dislocation is more common in young women. When the patella stays dislocated, people may have symptoms such as deformity of the knee, a bent knee, inability to move the knee, pain, swelling and tenderness of the affected knee.
When a patellar luxation occurs, the affected person can try to straighten out his knee if possible. If it is stuck or too painful to move, then one should stabilize the knee and seek prompt medical help In order to relocate the patella under anesthesia. After a patellar luxation, it is recommended to wear an immobilizer for several weeks to prevent moving the affected knee. Physical therapy can help to regain the muscle strength and rehabilitate the knee. For severe cases, surgery is necessary for reposition. Surgery also can help to avoid regular luxations of the patella.
