Smoker’s leg is a circulation disorder primarily affecting the arteries of the leg due to arteriosclerosis. It causes patients to take frequent rests after walking short distances due to pain in the calves.
Peripheral artery disease (PAD), also known as smoker’s leg, is a circulation disorder, mainly in the legs. It is caused by occlusion (by an arteriosclerostic plaque) of the arteries.
Smokers and diabetics are risk groups (see the article on arteriosclerosis). Patients feel strong, cramping soreness in their legs usually during strenuous activity, which improves after a short break. Patients also usually have cold and pale feet. In advanced stages, pain may also occur when resting (at night) and wounds may even fail to heal (forming ulcers).
The treatment depends on the stage of the disease. Important are stop smoking, optimal control of blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol as well as a healthy diet. For this, the most important measure is regular exercise training and lifelong use of aspirin. For more severe cases, the heart arteries must be kept functional with stents.

Online bookable doctors in your area will be indicated with the notation “Book appointment” or “Book externally”, additionally they will be displayed on top of the list for your convenience.
